How do Sex Therapists Become Sex Therapists?
The following information is based on information on the AASECT website regarding the certification process for becoming a sex therapist.
AASECT Requirements to become a Sex Therapist:
- Must be a member of AASECT.
- Agrees to follow the AASECT Code of Ethics.
- Master's degree plus two years of post-degree clinical experience or a Doctoral degree plus one year of post-degree clinical experience.
- Clinical Certification in either psychology, medicine, social work, counseling, nursing, or marriage and family therapy.
- Complete a minimum of ninety (90) clock hours of human sexuality education.
- Complete a minimum of (60) clock hours of training in how to do therapy with patients/clients whose diagnoses include Psychosexual Disorders.
- Participate in a minimum of ten (10) clock hours of group experience regarding human sexuality.
- Complete a minimum of two hundred fifty (250) hours of supervised clinical treatment of clients who present with sexual issues.
- Complete a minimum of fifty (50) hours of supervision with an AASECT Supervisor.
Like I said, if you are working with an AASECT certified sex therapist, you are working with someone who has spent a great deal of their life researching and garnering an understanding of their expertise.
